Communities of Need & Community of Solutions

Much of my thinking recently has been on Culture in Organisations. I am also interested in the Culture in Communities, and in particular Communities of Practice like Agile and Kanban. My thinking has lead me to observe that there are two distinct communities within a Community of Practice. One community based on solving problems, or a “Community of Need” and the other based on promoting solutions or a “Community of Solutions”.

How to Use Kaizen to Drive Service Improvements

Kaizen is a Lean Six Sigma term and a Japanese philosophy that focuses on continual improvement throughout all aspects of life. In fact, Kaizen is the Japanese word for “change for better” or “continual improvement.”

When applied to the workplace, Kaizen activities can improve every function of a business, from the IT service desk to sales operations, and from the CEO to a new employee on their first day. It aims to eliminate “waste” in all systems of an organization through the improvement of standardized activities and processes.

Empathy Mapping: The First Step in Design Thinking

not only must we deeply understand our users, but we must also help our colleagues understand them and prioritize their needs. Empathy maps, widely used throughout agile and design communities, are a powerful, fundamental tool for accomplishing both.

Definition: An empathy map is a collaborative visualization used to articulate what we know about a particular type of user. It externalizes knowledge about users in order to 1) create a shared understanding of user needs, and 2) aid in decision making.

Promise Theory for Team Cooperation

Dr. Mark Burgess, creator of CFEngine, explains how he uses concepts from physics to explain how complex systems work. He uses his Promise Theory to not only develop better computer systems, but also to give us a better framework for individual and team interactions.

Physics is great at describing how stuff works. It shows how stable a system is (a question that computer science doesn’t answer). Mark showed us how to use other diciplines to get ideas and create new concepts as he did with Promise Theory.

How to Become a Game-Changing Leader

it is increasingly important for business leaders to learn how to build companies that are simultaneously purpose-driven, performance-focused, and principles-led.

Being performance-driven is clearly essential to success; continuous disruption, rapid technological innovation, and turbulence require that today’s leaders build agile organizations with resilient employees in order to achieve superior performance.2
